Even before the House Republican caucus appoints a new leader to replace outgoing Rep. Wayne Scott, R-Canby, his heir apparent, Rep. Bruce Hanna, R-Roseburg, is sending signals that his tenure as the top House Republican will sharply deviate from the status quo.
Long-time Republican political consultant Chuck Adams will no longer run the show. Instead, Hanna has contracted with New York-based GOP political consultant Mercury Public Affairs, which sports a resume featuring prominent victories in Blue states, including Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in California, Governor George Pataki in New York and Oregon Sen. Gordon Smith.
Mercury Public Affairs will serve as the caucus' chief strategist as House Republicans strive to prevent Democrats from obtaining a stronger hold on the House chamber. Democrats need only five seats to capture the 36-member majority necessary to approve tax increases without Republican support.
Concerning the change, Hanna said "Winning the majority in 2008 will require new ideas and new strategies. Over the coming months," he said, "Mercury will play a key role in helping us develop issue-driven campaigns that will appeal to Oregon voters."
Whether the move will bear fruit remains to be seen, as most observers believe House Republicans face an uphill battle, as several GOP legislative incumbents are not seeking reelection.
