The legislature's experiment with annual sessions is compressing the campaign season for Oregon legislators and political candidates who are wasting no time to stock their political coffers by inviting constituents and lobbyists to attend a throng of fundraisers in the next several weeks.
More than 15 events, ranging from golf tournaments to rides on Willamette River jet boats to a tour of hop farm, are scheduled throughout the state .
Some view it as early to start contributing for an election more than a year away. However, candidates see it differently. They face a month-long time-out next February when there is a legislative special session. And the costs of campaigns continues to rise. In addition, if legislators start to raise money too late, some sources already have run dry.
